A deductive approach to animal health planning in organic dairy farming: Method description Organic Eprints
Selle, Margret; Hoischen-Taubner, Susanne; Sundrum, Albert.
Organic farming is often directly associated with an enhanced level of animal health and welfare. However, in spite of ongoing efforts in the fields of animal science, the animal health status in organic dairy farming does not in all respect meet consumers’ expectations. Reasons are manifold and differ considerably between farms as do the multi-factorial production diseases. Success of animal health planning highly depends on a sound diagnostic procedure at farm level and farmers’ intrinsic motivation to improve the animal health status. Both aspects are essential preconditions for the identification and implementation of the most appropriate farm-specific management measures. The aim of this paper is to introduce a participatory and farm-centric...

A field trial on the effects of pure sodium propionate and a combination with herbal extracts on short term development of subclinical ketosis Organic Eprints
Dorn, Katharina; Leiber, Florian; Sundrum, Albert; Holinger, Mirjam; Mayer, Philipp; Walkenhorst, Michael.
While glucogenic substances in ketosis prevention are commonly used, there is a lack of clinical studies about the effectiveness of ketosis therapy in particular by means of sodium propionate and herbal extracts. Fresh cows between 5 and 50 days in milk of 25 Swiss and German dairy farms were tested weekly for ketone bodies in blood. From 283 cows, 121 (42.8%) exceeded the threshold of 1.0 mmol/l blood-β-hydroxybutyrate (BBHB). Thereof 84 cows were randomly assigned to three treatments on each farm. Treatment SP-H was composed of sodium propionate (120 g per application) and an aqueous extract of seven herbs (13.5 g drug equivalent per application), treatment SP comprised pure sodium propionate (120 g per application) and treatment PL was a placebo. All...

Aktuelle Tiergesundheitssituation in ausgewählten Betrieben der ökologischen Schweinehaltung Organic Eprints
Sommer, Hendrik; Werner, Christina; Heine, Ulrike; Meemken, Diana; Blaha, Thomas; Sundrum, Albert.

Animal health and welfare in organic livestock production in Europe– current state and future challenges Organic Eprints
Hovi, Malla; Sundrum, Albert; Thamsborg, M.S..
Existing data on animal health and welfare in organic livestock production systems in the European Community countries are reviewed in the light of the demands and challenges of the recently implemented EU regulation on organic livestock production. The main conclusions and recommendations of a three-year networking project on organic livestock production are summarised and the future challenges to organic livestock production in terms of welfare and health management are discussed. The authors conclude that, whilst the available data are limited and the implementation of the EC regulation is relatively recent, there is little evidence to suggest that organic livestock management causes major threats to animal health and welfare in comparison with...

Assessing impacts of organic production on pork and beef quality Organic Eprints
Sundrum, Albert.
Organic livestock farming is based on a low input production method, aiming to provide products of a high product and process quality rather than maximizing production. The production of a high meat quality corresponds to the expectations of consumers who are both seeking a premium product and who are willing to pay premium prices. This review focuses on the question of whether organic pork and beef production currently meet consumer demands, and it elaborates the potentials and limitations for producing high-quality meats under the current organic framework. Although defined by specific and basic guidelines, organic livestock production is characterised by largely heterogeneous farming conditions that allow for huge differences in the availability of...

Ausfallkosten durch Eutererkrankungen und Lahmheiten auf ökologisch wirtschaftenden Milchviehbetrieben in Deutschland Organic Eprints
Hoischen-Taubner, Susanne; Krieger, Margret; Sundrum, Albert.
Production diseases have severe economic impacts in dairy farms. Financial losses due to culling, decreased productivity, discarded milk as well as costs for treatment and labour efforts are failure costs related to the occurrence of production diseases. To support decision making regarding herd health measures, failure costs caused by clinical and subclinical mastitis as well as mild and severe lameness were assessed on 60 organic dairy farms in Germany. Failure costs varied substantially between farms. Decision-making in terms of animal health requires a farm specific calculation of failure costs to enable the identification of those measures that provide the best cost-benefit relationship.

Aussagegehalt von Schlachthofdaten zur Verbesserung der Tiergesundheit Organic Eprints
Hoischen-Taubner, Susanne; Sundrum, Albert.

Sundrum, Albert; Keller, D..
Homeopathic remedies are means to an end. Success of treatment depends not only on the efficacy of remedies, but also on the prerequisite in terms of availability of expertise and appropriateness of the treatment procedure. To assess the extent by which a lege-artis treatment concept in homeopathy is performed in treating mastitis, a study was conducted on 64 mainly organic farms in Germany, France and Spain. The study revealed that most farmers only had a poor level of awareness of the principles of homeopathy and made use of human products regularly without rededication by a veterinarian or made use of forbidden substances. Treatments were accompanied by insufficient follow-up checks. Homeopathic treatment procedures were applied very heterogeneously....

Blattmasse feinsamiger Leguminosen als Eiweißkomponente für Schweine und Geflügel Organic Eprints
Hoischen-Taubner, Susanne; Sommer, Hendrik; Sundrum, Albert.
The nutrient supply of pigs and poultry in organic livestock farming suffers from a shortage of suitable home-grown protein sources. While clover-like legumes are widely used in cattle, the high levels of crude fiber restrict the use of these feedstuffs in the diet of monogastric animals. In the current study, comprehensive analyses were conducted with the focus on the leaf mass of clover-like legumes. The results revealed that in general leaf mass contained less fiber than the whole plant and on average high levels of protein and essential amino acids. However, values were severely affected among others by plant species, cut and time of harvest and thus varied considerably. Quality checks by analysis are required to make the potential of cloverlike...

Blattmasse von Rotklee als Proteinquelle für Schweine Organic Eprints
Sommer, hendrik; Sundrum, Albert.
The study focuses on the utilization of local clover-like legumes as a protein source for pigs. It is examined how high crude protein can be concentrated in red clover (Trifolium pratense) by separating the leaf mass of the stems. In this part of the study, the two breeds Titus and Milvus have been compared. The digestibility of the material was determined by an in-vitro method. Preliminary results show that the concentration of crude protein increased up to 27.5 % compared to the whole-plant content of 21.9 %.The concentration of digestible crude protein in the leaf rose averagely by 21 % compared to the whole plant. With Titus, a total of 15.7 dt ha-1 leaf mass protein was harvested. With Milvus, 14.0 dt protein leaf mass per ha were yielded. Separation...

BRIDGING THE GAP - IMPACT MATRIX ANALYSIS AND COST-BENEFIT CALCULATIONS TO IMPROVE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES REGARDING HEALTH STATUS IN ORGANIC DAIRY FARMING Organic Eprints
Sundrum, Albert; Hoischen-Taubner, Susanne.
Animal health status in organic dairy farming does not in all respect meet consumers’ expectations. Improvements are crucial to support consumers’ confidence and their willingness to pay premium prices. Considering animal health as an emergent property of the whole farm system the presented project aims to increase the implementation of evidence based measures and to improve practice of health management. This will be achieved by a multidisciplinary and participatory approach to develop farm specific solutions regarding preventive measures and appropriate treatment strategies.

Capturing systemic interrelationships by an impact analysis to help reduce production diseases in dairy farms Organic Eprints
Krieger, Margret; Hoischen-Taubner, Susanne; Emanuelson, Ulf; Blanco-Penedo, Isabel; De Joybert, Manon; Duval, Julie; Sjöström, Karin; Jones, Jones J.; Sundrum, Albert.
Production diseases, such as metabolic and reproductive disorders, mastitis, and lameness, emerge from complex interactions between numerous factors (or variables) but can be controlled by the right management decisions. Since animal husbandry systems in practice are very diverse, it is difficult to identify the most influential components in the individual farm context. However, it is necessary to do this to control disease, since farmers are severely limited in their access to resources, and need to invest in management measures most likely to have an effect. In this study, systemic impact analyses were conducted on 192 organic dairy farms in France, Germany, Spain, and Sweden in the context of reducing the prevalence of production diseases. The impact...

Carcass quality of organic pork Organic Eprints
Sundrum, Albert.
According to the Council Regulation (EC) No 1804/1999), organic livestock production is intended to ensure quality production rather than maximising production. In organic pig production, the availability of limited amino acids is the first limiting factor and the main reason why the performance capacity is clearly diminished compared to conventional production. In order to compensate for the lower productivity, quality production is a conditio sine qua none. Possibilities to improve the quality of organic pork were investigated in different feeding trials. Results from a first trial in 1999 showed that diets based on organic cereals and home grown grain legumes (faba beans, peas and lupines) have the potential to produce pork with a high intramuscular fat...

Conflicting areas in the ethical debate on animal health and welfare Organic Eprints
Sundrum, Albert.
There is a far-reaching agreement within western society, that a high level of animal health and welfare can be regarded as an ethical value. An increasing number of consumers are interested to purchase products that derive from animal-friendly housing conditions. Often animal-friendly and organic products are affiliated. Although the prescriptions of the EURegulation on organic agriculture clearly exceed the minimal standards of conventional livestock production, they do not automatically lead to a high status of animal health and welfare. Animal health status emerges from complex interactions within a farm system and thus is not primarily related to the production method or to minimal standards. Literature reviews indicate profound discrepancies between...
